Aquifer Drilling & Testing, Bloomfield, CT, used their Geoprobe® 7720DT to install monitoring wells using hollow stem augers, and to also collect bedrock core samples. According to Marques Larabie, Field Operations Manager for Aquifer Drilling, “On a larger project we would have used a truck-mounted rig and completed the bedrock work with it. But since there was only one location to be cored we brought in our new 7720DT.” With the longer stroke of the 7720DT there was ample room to use a water swivel under the hammer to direct water down the hole to remove the cuttings and cool the bit. “We were also able to power a progressive cavity pump with the auxiliary hydraulics,” he said. Four-inch casing was advanced to a depth of 24 feet. They then used a roller bit to clear out the casing and send down the core barrel. “By using the rotation on the hammer,” Marques added, “we were able to core to a depth of 38 feet and collect 14 feet of core with no problems."
